It was a record-setting year for Destiny St. Cyr who overcame a hamstring injury to turn in solid performances at the FHSAA Class 2A state track meet at Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

The American Heritage School Boca/Delray junior battled a hamstring injury in the summer that bothered her until this January. Once recovered, St. Cyr was able to finish third in the state in the long jump (17-feet, 5-1/2 inches), sixth in the triple jump (36-feet, 6-3/4 inches) and was a member of the sixth place, 4×100 relay (49.38).

“It was very exciting,” said St. Cyr, 16, of Lake Worth, who went to state for the first time and in her track debut at the school. “It was frustrating at points because I had a lot of setbacks and my hamstring injury. I had to work even harder to get back to where I was and even better.

“I’m was completely shocked when I had those jumps and ran my times,” St. Cyr said. “In my 100 meters, I started the season running 13.05 and ended the season running 12.61. I was proud of setting my school records multiple times and breaking my own records and being able to make it to the FHSAA state meet. It was very emotional, but I knew I worked hard for this.”

She owns the school record for long jump (18’2) and triple jump (36’11) and the 4×100 relay. She also cranked out an impressive 12.61 clocking in the 100-meter dash.

She didn’t run from June until September and just resorted to stretching and light running. She was at full strength for the postseason run.

“From the beginning of the season, I didn’t think I was going to go to state,” she said, “but once I started jumping what I was jumping and running the way I was in districts and regionals, I thought I had a chance. I had more confidence. I was more happy and joyful.”
